An Indonesian film describing love amongst Muslims in Beijing

On Wednesday March 25th, the festival screened “Assalamualaikum Beijing” with a stage appearance afterwards at Sakurazaka Theatre B in Naha city. Lead actress Revalina S. Temat and producers Ody Mulya and Eun Jung Kang talked to the audience with comedians Trendy Angel.


 


The movie that deals with love and religion in the Islamic community was a top ten box office in 2014 in Indonesia.

 

On the day before her wedding, Asmara learns the bitter fact that her fiancee, Dewa had an affair with colleague Anita. Despite her sadness, Asmara receives a job offer in Beijing. There Asmara slowly falls in love with the kind and attentive Zhongwen. Life is totally new and unexpected for Asmara in the foreign city and she encounters unexpected situations and difficulties.  

 
 


On stage Ms. Temat explained the background of the film and why got a lot of attention in Indonesia. “Assalamualaikum Beijing is based on a long narrative poem of the Sani people in Yunnan province of China. It’s the life story of the beautiful Ashima. This might be one of the reasons it was a big hit in Indonesia.” Ms. Temat added, “I would like to describe her enduring attitude to life.”

 
 


Trendy Angel asked her, “What kind of men can be popular with the ladies?” Ms. Temat responded, “Men who like comedy and are clean.” The duo also queried producers Ody Mulya and Eun Jung Kang about Japanese comedians Cow Cow, who are getting popular in Indonesia. They answered “I know them!” which excited Trendy Angel.
