The "R-18 Literary Prize" was begun in 2002 by sponsor Shinchosha, as a literary award for women, by women. This is the third film in the series, following on from "Jijojibaku no Watashi", directed by Naoto Takenaka, and "Jellyfish", directed by Kaneko Shusuke. This film is based on Siki Asaka's novel "Manganiku to boku", which was selected for the grand prize from amongst a record 821 applicants. Director Kiki Sugino makes her directorial debut. She has previously developed a strong reputation at home and abroad for starring in and producing films "Hospitalite", "Odayaka", and "Au revoir l'ete". With this film, and her next film "Yokudo", she has won New Director awards at both the Busan and Osaka Film Festivals. Shot on location in Kyoto, Sugino shows a consciousness of the work of director Mizoguchi Kenji, who is so skillful in his depictions of women. Each of the women that the main protagonist Watabe meets one after another reflect the issues faced by modern young women in Japan.
Film adaptation by Siki Asaka of the "for women, by women" R-18 literary prize winning "Manganiku to Boku". Set in Kyoto, this is the first feature-length film by Asian Indie Cinema Muse and Kiki Sugino, who serves as actress and producer.
